Watt the Actual

Watt the Actual helps estimate what a prepaid electricity purchase should buy, understand the charges around it, and see the tariff logic behind the result.

Who is the electricity for? How do I know?
What is this?
Why does the month matter?

Tariff blocks start again each calendar month. Only include purchases from the month selected here.

Have you already received or bought units this month? Why do we ask?
What is FBE?

Enter only units actually shown on your token, receipt or account. Leave this at zero if you did not receive FBE or do not know.

How is this calculated?
Do you expect other deductions on this purchase? What counts?
Debt recovery, arrears, FBE, meter configuration, reseller rules and account-specific deductions can materially change the units actually issued. Enter what you know. If you do not know, the result remains an estimate.

FAQs

What the calculator is asking, why it matters, and where you can usually find the answer.

What does residential, sectional title or business mean here?

Choose the type that best describes the electricity supply you are calculating. A sectional title or complex resident may still be supplied directly by City Power, or may buy through a reseller. That is why we ask who actually sells or vends the electricity next.

How do I know whether I buy directly from City Power or through a reseller?

Check the prepaid token, banking purchase receipt, vending receipt, municipal statement or complex communication. Look for the name of the organisation that vends or administers the electricity. If you cannot tell, choose "I am not sure". Watt the Actual will avoid pretending that it knows.

Where do I find my tariff?

Look for wording such as Residential Prepaid High, Residential Prepaid Low, Residential Reseller Conventional or the relevant business tariff on your municipal statement, prepaid token, vending receipt or provider documentation. Do not infer Prepaid Low merely from household income. If the tariff is not shown, select "Not sure" and the calculator will compare the supported possibilities.

Why does the calendar month matter?

The increasing block tariff tracks how many units have been bought during a calendar month. Once cumulative purchases move into the next block, later units cost more or less according to that block. The block position starts again for a new calendar month. Only enter earlier purchases from the month you selected.

Why do earlier purchases change the answer?

Because the tariff is cumulative. A R500 purchase near the start of a month may buy a different number of units from a R500 purchase after hundreds of units have already been bought.

What if I know what I spent, but not how many units I received?

Enter the total Rand amount and as much of the receipt breakdown as you can: utility or reseller charges, debt recovery, other deductions and FBE units. Watt the Actual then reconstructs an estimated previous kWh position. If your receipt shows the actual units, enter them. Supplied units are treated as more reliable than a reconstruction.

What is a Utility charge or reseller charge?

Some vending receipts show a separate amount removed from the purchase before the balance is converted into electricity. The wording varies by provider. If a previous purchase shows both the total purchase and the Utility charge, Watt the Actual can derive the percentage automatically: Utility charge divided by purchase amount.

The published City Power reseller service and capacity charges belong to the reseller tariff structure. Watt the Actual does not simply divide the full reseller-level monthly amount across residents because the actual allocation method can differ by scheme and provider.

What are debt recovery, arrears and other deductions?

A vending transaction may recover money that is not payment for new electricity units. Examples can include arrears, account debt, provider charges or other account adjustments. If your receipt shows one of these separately, enter it. If you leave it at zero, Watt the Actual assumes no such deduction for the estimate.

What is Free Basic Electricity?

FBE is a free electricity allocation available to qualifying customers under applicable municipal programmes. Eligibility and allocation can change. Watt the Actual does not decide whether you qualify. Enter only FBE units actually shown on your token, receipt or account for the selected month.

Why are there two VAT methods?

Receipts do not all expose the calculation in the same way. If the Utility charge is removed first and VAT is contained in the remaining electricity amount, choose "Utility charge first". If the receipt shows VAT calculated on the full purchase before the separate charge, choose "VAT first". If you cannot determine the treatment, choose "Not sure". Watt the Actual calculates both and shows the resulting range instead of silently choosing one.

How do I know whether a business tariff is Summer or Winter?

The approved City Power business schedule publishes separate Summer and Winter energy rates. Check the tariff period shown by your provider or current tariff documentation. If you are unsure, select "Not sure". Watt the Actual will calculate both seasonal possibilities.

Where do the tariff rates come from?

Glossary

Electricity terminology, translated into normal human language.

kWh

Kilowatt-hour. This is the unit of electricity you are buying. When your token says you received 100 units, that normally means 100 kWh.

Tariff

The pricing structure used to calculate what you pay for electricity. Different customer types can have different tariffs.

Tariff block

A range of electricity consumption with its own price per kWh. Your price can change as your total units for the calendar month move into another block.

Prepaid High

A City Power residential prepaid tariff with published monthly service and capacity charges in addition to energy charges.

Prepaid Low

A separate City Power residential prepaid tariff with different energy rates. Watt the Actual will not assume you are on this tariff unless you select it or ask the calculator to compare possibilities.

Fixed charges

Monthly service, capacity or other published charges that are separate from the price of the electricity units themselves.

Reseller

An organisation that sits between the municipal electricity supplier and the end customer. This is common in some complexes, sectional title schemes and managed properties.

Utility charge

A separate deduction that may appear on a prepaid vending or banking receipt. The exact purpose and calculation can vary by provider.

Debt or arrears recovery

Money removed from a prepaid purchase to recover an existing account balance instead of buying new electricity units.

FBE

Free Basic Electricity. A free allocation available to qualifying customers under applicable municipal programmes. Watt the Actual does not determine eligibility.

VAT

Value Added Tax. Where the exact treatment of a separate reseller or utility charge is unclear, Watt the Actual can compare both supported calculation treatments rather than silently guessing.

Vending provider

The system or company that processes the prepaid electricity purchase and issues the token or units. It may not be the same organisation that supplies the electricity.

Something looks wrong?

That is useful. Community evidence is how this gets better. You can report a mismatch or send an anonymised receipt. Before sending a receipt, remove your name, address, meter number, account number, prepaid token, banking details and anything else that can identify you.

Report a mismatch
Watt the Actual is an independent community information project. It is not operated by or affiliated with City Power, the City of Johannesburg, NERSA, any electricity reseller, body corporate, managing agent, vending provider, bank or payment channel.

This calculator provides an informational estimate only. It is not an electricity bill, vending quote, tariff determination, legal opinion or guarantee of the number of units that any customer will receive. Results depend on published tariff information and the information entered by the user. Actual prepaid purchases can differ because of tariff changes, debt or arrears recovery, FBE, meter configuration, reseller allocations, utility charges, vending rules, fees, VAT treatment, account adjustments and rounding.

Where an exact vending recovery mechanism is not confirmed for the current tariff year, Watt the Actual identifies the calculation as an estimate or provides a range. Users should verify material decisions against an official municipal account, electricity provider, reseller or vending receipt.
